Just wondering if anyone comes from a non-denominational christian if not state your denomination. While reading the inside booklets for skillet cds it looks like some of skillet may come from the non-denominational church.

Darn, someone beat me to it.

Yeah, I'm baptist if you could call me any one in particular. But I'm a very odd baptist.... scaring the pastor is an amusing past time....(To those that don't know, I'm 6'7" and wear a full length black trenchcoat everywere. Aparently, walking into a sermon late once, I nearly gave him a heart attack...)

My church is congregational. But I personally take no denomination, like CJ I see non-denom as becoming a denom in itself.

Some (many) have different methods of preaching. Church of God is a great place to hear about salvation and the people often throw in an "Amen!" for support, but the music is more traditional as far as I know. Brethren churches are about community and saving souls whenever a new person walks in the door, and they do it well -- some churches out there have contemporary service, some don't. Baptists, as far as I know, preach about the Almighty Salvation of Jesus that we have, a POWERFUL message. There is no up or down, unless you don't like a strict church that prohibits being zealous in God's name, then you need to get out of that church. But there is no difference, in reality, and it does often rely on the Pastor, but if you wanna know one completely different church that secular people often think is the only way to religion -- catholic. If anyone here goes to a catholic church, I advise they think twice about where they are going. It's not a bad place to learn about Jesus, but it's not a great place to grow in faith and joy in the Lord. Hardcore catholics that pray to the saints won't make it through to heaven, because we are advised in the Bible to pray only to God, no one else. I hope I have helped in any way, and I apologize if I've confused any of you :P God bless!

just so you know Disciple, there's nothing wrong with going to a Catholic church. Augustine (quoted in my sig) is one example of a Catholic. i'd say he didn't have any trouble growing in his faith. ;) you may say that's 'cause he was back in the time when the years only had 3 digits. :o but C.S. Lewis was a Catholic. he's one of the smartest men of God i've ever come across. so watch what you say. (no, i'm not catholic).

as for the "why" of denominations, it can be summed up somewhat in this: different denomination focus on different things. they all have (if they are Christian) Salvation as the focus, but, for example, Baptists make a big deal out of (you guessed it) baptism. the particular focus of your denom may not be true for a particular church, but for the denom. as a whole it will be.

correct.. their church is part of network of churches throughout the US and the UK called Lifelink International (http://www.lifelink-international.org/). When they lived in Memphis, they went to the Lifelink church here... that's where I attend now. Since they've moved to Wisconsin, they've joined a church up there... I don't believe it is "officially" connected with Lifelink International (it's not listed on the LI webpage), but I know is at the very least still pretty closely connected to the Lifelink church here in Memphis.

I went to a foursquare church most of my life (still go to a [4] yg), but my family started going to an Assembly of God a couple of months ago. As for me personally, I don't believe in denominations b/c I think God never intended for the church to be divided like that. *cough* Anyway.

Agreed on the denomination thing. Don't like it. Myself: I was raised in the Lutheran Church and still go to one when I'm at college. But I really don't like labelling myself as a denomination. I usually just say Christian and that's that.

in 1 Peter [or some where in the NT] some people were having a discussion with Jesus about who to follow.. and Jesus {basically] summed it up as... one can learn from different pastors and learn from different churches. I was three different demonations.. and I learned much from all of them.

well i'm not surprised... it isn't a denomination by any means... it's just a small group of churches (about 20 total) that work together. we have guest speakers come over from the UK churches to speak at Visible School and to our church all the time. I have no idea how long LI has been around though... might say on the website. *shrug*

lamb_servant72
06-25-2005, 04:15 AM
What does 4 Square mean?

I'm not into denominations. I think the differences make us argue about the Word, and God doesn't want us to do that.

I think if you love God with all of your heart and your neighbor as yourself, you're pleasing God.

If you must know, I was raised United Methodist (preacher's kid), married a Baptist worship leader, so we were Baptist for awhile. About eight years ago we started going to a charismatic church. We moved several times and have been involved in churches of all denominations, non-denominations, and inter-denominations!!

I think most churches have some truth, and some "faults", because we are human. I think as long as we are seeking God, and trying to be closer to Him, just go where you feel led to go.

I have heard preacher's say that if you are not dedicated to your one church, you are not dedicated to God. Maybe I'm wrong, but I go to a Methodist church on Sunday morning, a non-denominational church on Sunday afternoon, and a Baptist church on Wednesday night. All for different reasons.

As far as love your neighbor as yourself, the hard truth is, when I have gone through hard times as an adult, the people that have really shown me God's love were people that didn't even go to church. With one of these couples, the wife (my closest friend in this town) had an experience growing up similar to what CJ has shared on other threads. She refuses to visit any church I invite her to. She is scared of church. I didn't understand at first. But when I got to know her extended family, and saw what that church had done to them, I understood. We talk about God, but not church. If God ever leads me to talk to her about church, I would, but not otherwise.
