Okay, I thought I'd give a lesson today, and here's some tricks, and basic skateboard know-how.

First, if you're righthanded, then you put your right foot on the back screws, and your left on the front ones.
If you're not, put your left foot on the back screws and right one on the front ones.
If you put your right foot on the back, then you're regular footed.
If you put your left foot on the back, then you're goofy footed.

The little metal things that are attached to the board are called trucks.

The wheels are called the wheels(;D)

The board is called the deck by the way

The back is called the tail, and the front is called the nose.

Okay, I'm only going to put some basic tricks on here today, I'll add more later.

Ollie

Put your feet in the proper positions, put your back foot on the tail of the board, and your front foot on the front screws.

Pop your tail down, and by pop, I mean slam it down

As the tail hits the ground, slid your foot up the front of the board
Your foot will bring the nose downm and it should bring the front to the ground

Try to flatten the board out when you get into the air.

As you fall, put your legs down, and just ride away.

Basic Grind

To grind, rool towards the object you intend to grind on, then Ollie at it, but keep your nose forward, and keep moving forward. (Hopefully, your trucks will land on the rail, and you'll start slidin' away)

[b]NOTE: PLEASE wear your pads and your helmet when you do attempt to do these.
I've gotten some nasty scabs and scars from not doing so, and please use discresion(don't jump off of buildings or anything, or if you haven't tried the trick before, dont do it off of your car or anything(My friend fractured some bones before by doing stuff like that)

^Yes, DO wear pads and a helmet! And don't wear your favorite pair of pants ever while learning to skateboard! I tore a hole in the knee of my favorite jeans trying to learn, and I was sad (not to mention my knee hurt for like two weeks straight!)!

Thanks for the tips! If I ever see a skateboard let alone ride one, I'll be sure to remember that! ;D

ok a lot of this is not how it's really explained or can be explained differently. No offense to Rachael.

First off, when you ride(I do teach people how to skate so I have experience in this area) if just trying to ride on the board ok you're fine the way it's said if just riding around(it's easier to stay balanced). Except: it does not matter righthanded lefthanded for I am a lefty who skate regular. It is a matter of how you feel comfortable pushing off(Right foot or Left foot). Although Never. I repeat. Never. skate mongo (pushing off then putting your foot in the front. It screws you up. I used to skate that way).

Second: If you mean to ollie or get comfortable enough to ollie. Set up with your front foot either in the center of the board or about 1/3 from the nose.
Ollie
1)Push off (or if stationary) and place your back foot on the tail. http://img46.photobucket.com/albums/v140/Zero_Punk900/rollup.jpg http://img46.photobucket.com/albums/v140/Zero_Punk900/bend.jpg
2)Slap the tail on the ground and at the same time slide your front foot up onto the front truck bolts.
http://img46.photobucket.com/albums/v140/Zero_Punk900/tail.jpg
3)As you are doing this you also end up taking your back foot off of the tail and level out the board.
http://img46.photobucket.com/albums/v140/Zero_Punk900/level.jpg
4)As you fall push your feet down and land on the ground (i recommend bending your knees on impact so that you just get accustomed to it for higher jumps like stairs which it will be awhile before you can).
http://img46.photobucket.com/albums/v140/Zero_Punk900/land.jpg

5)When you finish, your front foot should be on the front truck bolts and your back foot on the back truck bolts.

*It can be done the way that was explained by Rachael, but it becomes harder to do and the basic ollie is done with foot in middle slide to front.

I usually recommend to people to go through the motions if they can't get it at first and then to put it all together. Try for just landing it first and as you get better try for more height and speed.

okay now i'm gonna sound really stupid about what i had just said. what else is new?

i just tried they way that Rachael explained it. i didn't get much height probably because i haven't done it in so long. that's how i originally tried but it hadn't worked for me but now it seems to work. plus i don't tend to pull my back foot so far over the board. it stays at about 1-2inches off the entire time. so a recall on saying that it was explained differently. both ways work, and what does it matter which one you choose as long as it works? either way the motions are the same.

slap tail
front foot to truck bolts
level
land
roll away

sorry bout my ignorance! :)

That's fine with me, I just explained it the easiest way I know how.
People sometimes say how to do it, but they say it very complicated, so you don't get it....

LOL I know, I am too clumsy to skate.

it's not that hard to skate really. another word of advice for people who actually want to learn: if your back foot won't stay on the board, it's because you are not committing to it so a way to fix that is to do a stationary ollie with your back foot loosely taped to the board. i say loosely because it has to be able to get off of the board and move up to the back truck bolts but not be able to get completely off of the board and onto the ground.

another thing: when you start out you want to have a board and a first aid kit. when you get pretty good you want to have a board and a cell phone and be ready to call 911 or just skate in hospital parking lots so they can get you into the ER quickly.

More tips by ZP coming to a thread near you!

Hehe...so true...my older sis has scars ALL over her knees and legs from skating injuries...even though she is major tan, her scars are even MORE brown!

Ya my first day into middle school and almost into high school too I went in basically wrapped in gauze because of so many skating injuries during the summer. I have many scars to prove my defeats or should I say my stories.

Yeah, at IYC this past week the Manna Skateboarding team was there and they did tricks and stuff, and there was this kid with a broken arm in a cast and shoulder support and the Manna guys were asking him if it was a skating injury! (Of course it was!)

LOL. You should have said a "thread" near you. ;D

BTW, I bike. No Skateboarding. No Rollerblading. No Surfing. No Snowboarding (I will learn that soon though). No Skiing. Just Biking. :P

Ya I should've said thread so I've changed it now.

Hey does anybody here like to goof off with a little old school skating. You should know the stuff, skating before the ollie was invented. Riding banks and stuff and using a surfing style with the board. I'm really lovin' doing that right now just because it flows so much and looks actually kinda graceful and not a sketchy as a lot of skateboarding has become now. If I get some pics of me doing it then I'll put 'em up. ;D

You can tell that I don't get to showcase my skills that much. :'( Kids around here are more about how many stairs can you jump, not stuff like vert or flatland(the kind of stuff I like).

Good with the thread thing.

and...Old school? Two words: Mike Vallely. LOL. I don't do skating but I saw an actual video of him in the bonus feature things on the game "Tony Hawk's Underground". So I don't skate but I play the game. He he. ;D

I meant people here who skate old school, but it's kew. I play the games too but only when it's either too hot to skate for long, raining, snowing, or night. What can I say, I love doing the real deal than sitting down and doing it on a video game.

Yeah. Even though I don't skateboard, doing the real version of anything is always better. (Except when it's a game you can't play in real life...)

Yeah, I wish I could go outside and skate right now, but it is just TOO hot! It was 101 yesterday (not taking into account the humidity!), and I have no clue how hot it is today! I like to wait til it gets fairly cool outside, but that won't be for a LONG time!

Here's a nice tip...

Keep a first-aid kit nearby at all times.

Zero_Punk900
07-15-2004, 11:48 AM
Ya that's always a good tip!

It was so hot here just two days ago that my friends and I had to wait until dark before we could go out to skate at schools and stuff. Yesterday was WAY too hot, but I still went out and skated until I collapsed. FUN STUFF! It won't get cool around here until probably September, but skaters still try to get out at some point and skate. Who cares about the heat right?

I do both, I do them gracefully(liek you said)though.
Like I swith from Old school to new age quickly, and it looks the same.
I'm afraid of jumping stairs by the way, I've dome it a few times, and it's been a painful experience.

I won't get into THAT lol ::]

Wow, 101? That was around the temperature in the fields today!

I bike too, it's great. As far as skating I don't know if I'll ever be coordinated enough to do it ::]
