It's pretty much an obvious thing; never take it apart. You didn't need to tell me that... but I must support you for saying it, because there are plenty of people who (and I mean people who aren't qualified/practiced enough to do so) will do it. If you want to know how to clean the laser head, ask playstation.com

ok, if your problem was your laser is missaligned, which was the problem with the earlier PS2's... My sugestion is find an electronic Botique (SP?) and they'll give you a 50 dollar discount on your next PS2 as long as its intact

My first and only, $210. But never allow friends/siblings to borrow it. I didn't allow her to, but my sister took it. Now I may never get it back.

My PS2 sometimes says "Disc read error", but it's probably cause the disc isn't in good shape. Like today, I tried to load my memory card disc (I hate doing that) and it said "disc....." 3 times before it worked. I'm not quite sure when I got my PS2, or if it was even near the time they came out, but it was maybe around Thanksgiving few years back? I dunno.... But I've had the urge to take it apart a few times (I'm like that. when I was little I took apart one of my favorite toys, and I couldn't put it back together :'( ) but I never took my PS2 apart....

I got a disk cleaner & CD Player/CD-ROM Drive cleaner for $12.00. You can get the disk cleaner alone for probably around $8.00 at Wal-Mart.

WARNING!: DO NOT USE THE CD PLAYER/CD-ROM DRIVE CLEANER ON GAMING CONSOLES! AS IT SAYS ON THE PACKAGE, DO NOT ATTEMPT, IT WILL SCREW UP YOUR PS2/XBOX.

Haven't tried it myself, but as Mad_Cow did, I posted a warning for those who'd attempt it.

They released the PS2 before they had perfected the laser, so it was able to get misalligned easily, Sony wanted to beat Xbox, so....

I've taken a ps2 apart before... after a cat knocked it off of the table and broke it. But it was dying before that, so i suppose the cat put it out of its misery.

Absolutely true. If you want them to do something, you can always tell 'em you want your money back so you can get an XBox or a GameCube...

HA HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know. Never try new things, unless they are right. And since you can never know what's right, and you can't stop trying, there is practically no solution to this delima! Except ditching it, and buying a new PS2, or wait for the next system?
