Did you know rawhide and pig ears are both very dangerous treats for your dogs?? Here's why...

-Choking-

Problem...
An obvious problem, choking is undoubtedly the most common danger rawhide evokes. Many dogs are given rawhide to chew on unsupervised. This is very dangerous considering that even dogs that are being watched carefully can choke on rawhide.

Prevention...
There is no way to really prevent your dog from choking on rawhide. However, supervising your dog while he is chewing on it will insure that if he does begin to choke, you will be there to help him. It is important to familiarize yourself with canine CPR and and heimlich.

-Blockages-

Problem...
Both rawhide and pig ears are digested extremely slowly. If a dog consumes a large amount of rawhide in a short amount of time, intestinal blockage can occur. This is when an obstruction of undigested treats blocks either the large or small intestine. Serious complications can occur, including severe vomiting, diarrhea, and possibly even death.

Prevention...
Always monitor and limit your pet’s consumption of rawhide and pig ears.

-Salmonella-

Problem...
Many rawhide chews and pig ears contain salmonella, just as raw meat would. Salmonella is a dangerous bacteria that has been known to kill. This bacteria has been the cause of death for many, many dogs worldwide. What’s worse is that humans can also become infected with it, simply by handling their pet’s treats.

Prevention...
It is possible to purchase rawhide that has been tested and then treated for the salmonella bacteria. However, even this rawhide is not 100% safe. Since salmonella presents a danger to humans as well as canines, always wash with soap and hot water after touching a rawhide bone.

-Acute Pancreatis-

Problem...
Acute pancreatis is a severe and often deadly disease caused by the harmful bacteria contained in rawhide and pig ears. Symptoms of acute pancreatis include diarrhea, dehydration, vomiting, fever, stomach pain, absence of hunger. This disease is also responsible for the annual death of many dogs.

Prevention...
There is no way to eliminate all bacteria that causes acute pancreatis. However, specially treated rawhide and pig ears tend to be safer for your pet.

-Arsenic-

Problem...
Rawhide and pig ears processed in foreign countries definitely pose the most risk to your pet. In many countries where modern refrigeration isn't available, arsenic - a cheap, widely sold, but very lethal poison - is added in small amounts as a preservative. Arsenic poisoning can affect any dog, but small breeds seem to be especially harmed.

Prevention...
Never purchase rawhide or pig ears processed outside of the USA.

Well, my friend's little Pomeranian/Spitz mix (that is like 15 pounds maybe) ate like a huge chocolate candy bar that was left on their kitchen counter plus some other Easter chocolates while the family was out, and the dog was fine...so, yeah...

My dog likes to "eat" baby oil and tanning oil. Is that normal? Is it unhealthy?

Today I fixed her favorite, delicious breakfast. I put her bowl inside a larger container and poured baby oil in the larger container to try to keep the ants from getting her food. She just lapped up the baby oil. And I know she just had fresh water, so it's not thirst.

bob
06-14-2005, 07:00 AM
Maybe she just likes the taste, my dog would eat everything, he once ate 4 raw hamburgers, but he loved raw eggs the best, I don't know maybe she likes the taste or something...

lamb_servant72
06-14-2005, 07:26 AM
I just hope it's not bad for her.

06-21-2005, 12:38 PM
My dog hated baths, we would have to tie him to a tree by his leash (we usually had him on a chain) but he would run around the tree in the little circle that his leash allowed him. He weighed about 90 pounds so he was a pretty strong dog also.

Well, our water hose had cold water. . . so I can't exactly blame my dog, I don't think he liked being clean though, because after we washed him he'd immediately roll in the dirt. . .
