So, I'm bored, thought I'd start a thread for all you college students out there. To discuss the joys of all-nighters during finals week, living in dorms, college cafeterias, demented profs, and useless gen. ed. classes. I could post something to actually start discussion in a while, but I have to jet off to go fly right now...the lovely life of an aviation major.

College was awsome!! I made lifelong friends there. We built and challenged one another's faith and we helped one another through alot. We had a blast!! It's so fun getting our families together now.

On the other hand, I'm still paying for a degree that I'm not using! But, it was worth it. I met my husband and my best friend!

I love college a heck of a lot more than I ever did high school. Sure, high school was a breeze, and college is tough (especially since I'm a Chemistry major), but I like the independence that comes with higher education. I managed to pass my first year of college with a 4.0 both semesters, and I'm praying that I'll do just as well the next three years...

I don't really know. I mean, I go to a private Liberal Arts college that has Methodist roots, but it is NOT by ANY MEANS a Christian College. Yet I know people who go to a private Baptist college a few hours away, and there are just as many party-ers and stuff like that going on at the Christian college...I think college is what you make it. I have not suffered in my faith by just attending a non-Christian college. But if someone truly feels called to attend a Christian college, then that is their choice...

Go wherever you please...

I didn't like high school, but I love college. I feel like I have so much more room to breathe. The material is far more challenging of course, yet I'm getting far better grades in college than I did in high school.

I'm a history major, if anyone cared...

That's exactly how it is for me (though I am making the same grades I made in high school now in college, and that's a good thing!). I like the freedom and the openness of learning. While some people become bums without anyone around to really motivate them or without a TIGHT schedule, I am thriving "on my own." ;D

And I'm a Chemistry major!

Yes, they are very liberal here. *nods*

riz
06-08-2005, 04:44 AM
That's a slight overgeneralization. Most of the younger population tend to have a liberal mindset to start out with (ha, which is a little bit of an overgeneralization also)... but you'll find that a good amount of people tend to think in a more conservative way. You just have to look for them. They're there. Probably not a vocal.

And, to tell you the truth, a lot of countries in Europe are FAR more liberal than the ones here.

I went to a state college and a private college. I prefered the small, private college. That came as a surprise to me, because I had lived in small towns and cities growing up, and I thought I would prefer the large state university with everything it had to offer.

At the private college, the classes were small and you got to know the professors very well...instead of being in a class with 300 other students. It's better when it comes to getting letters of recommedations from your professors.

The private, Christian college I went to was so small that everyone in my major pretty much had all the same classes together. So, you got to know everyone real well, and we helped each other alot on strengths and weaknesses. It was great.

We all keep in touch now, and keep one another informed of job openings in our areas.

Here's my advice for college:

1. Don't put too much on your plate at one time.

When your young, you CAN do it all...but you will eventually burn out. I tried to work full time and take an overload of classes each semester, and go summers too, which would have given me my four year degree in three years. I got married during college and had my first child. I was student teaching when I was pregnant with my second child. Eight months into my pregnancy, and just 13 teaching days left, I began having complications. My doctor told me I had put so much stress on my body that I had to stay off of my feet. I had to withdraw.

I eventually went back and completed my degree, but after I learned to slow down!

Master one thing at a time. Even if you're a high energy person, why do that to yourself?

2. Don't get into debt if you can avoid it.

People will tell you that student loans are great, because they are so easy to get and low interest. I wish I hadn't listened! There are scholarships and grants out there that you have to really dig for. Take some time to do some research on this. My fiancial aide office wasn't one to let you know what was really out there. There are alternatives to loans!

No matter which college you go to (be it private or public), there will be parties all over the place.
Not true. While I would definitely agree with the public schools, not so with private. While at any school you CAN find parties, at my school at least, you would have to look for them, as opposed to a lot of schools where it's in your face all the time, and people are always talking about how wasted they were last weekend etc., etc. also, the colleges in this country are so liberal As was said before, that is a generalization...it IS possible to find schools (other than ultra hardcore places like John Brown U. and whatever the Christian school in Pensacola) that do have a student body and faculty that is generally conservative, Christian, pro-life, pro-marriage, and so forth.

Finally, some more words on the whole Private/Public school thing. I went to a state university for 2 years, and am just finishing my first year+summer session at a Christian university. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. At the state university, practically the entire student body and faculty were off the left end of the political spectrum, and the profs tried to force their views on the students. There were university organizations like the NORMLs (trying to legalize pot) and of course the GLBT rights groups. And if any of you think that girls on Christian campuses have a problem with modesty... Also, smoking, drinking, drug use, and sex were all quite common, the usual at a public school.
A Christian school is nice because (at least here) the profs are Christian, also, because it's a much smaller school, the classes are smaller, you get to know people better, the profs have more time for you, etc. Bad things-at a Christian school it's really easy to live in a bubble-not know any non-Christians and therefore not have a chance at impacting them. It's something I've struggled with this year, and I'm still looking for ways to get involved in serving outside the bubble. Also, at any Christian school you will run into a lot of insincere Christians, which can be frustrating.

I think our definitions of a private college are different. You are speaking specifically about religious colleges (such as Concordia etc., if I'm not mistkaen). I personally am speaking about private colleges which have a religious affiliation but really do not enforce the said religion on the campus. My college is affiliated with the Methodist Church. However, that doesn't stop people who are not Methodist (or Christian) to come here. There's a chapel, but it's ecumenical.

The whole gamut of beliefs is "represented" here... from athiesm to Christianity, Islam to Wicca.

And you don't have to search for parties. Trust me. They're everywhere. Check the fraternity and sorority dormitories.

Again, depends a lot on the school...and you kind of proved my point, at some places, if you dont go looking for trouble (aka going to the party places) you don't find it. And yes, I was talking about private, evangelical Christian schools. If you look at private schools in general, they are no better and in many cases worse when it comes to partying etc. than public universities.

thalia
06-08-2005, 08:41 PM
Eh, college is what YOU make it. If someone wants to party, they will...for me, college is about learning, about having a goal for the future and acheiving it...and so I am not going to screw up my chances of getting into grad school or med school by partying and flunking and such...

I managed to get my tuition costs down from 16,000 to 6,000 through a combination of good student loans..only for 2,000 though and the rest were scholarships.

go_home_red
06-09-2005, 10:02 AM
Parties? I don't know what you guys are talking about.

I was an english major at Wayne State College--the one in Nebraska, not Michigan (which is actually Wayne State University). The two aren't affiliated.

I also ran cross-country and track in college. If anyone ever tells you that all athletes get special treatment, feel free to slap them--hard and repeatedly. We don't get special treatment because we're student-athletes. We're student athletes because we're special. Like the aformentioned colleges, the two are often confused.

My GPA was a 3.2. Since graduation, I have found that a great GPA score will merit (maybe) a thumbs-up during an interview. I've yet to hear of a great GPA capturing a job. Intel Corp. hired my sister for the fact that she had a master's degree in computer science, not because of her GPA. A good GPA will, however, help get you into graduate school.

I better stop now, before I go and hurt someone's feelings. If it's too late for that...well, flame on...

riz
06-09-2005, 06:21 PM
A good GPA will also make sure you will be able to retain scholarships, which is important if you can't afford college without them. This is my predicament. So getting a high GPA is definitely important to me because of that.

And it doesn't hurt to have that higher GPA on your resume either. Even if it might not be the deciding factor in a job (which it obviously won't be), it won't turn off interviewers.

doormonkey
06-09-2005, 07:20 PM
GPA=Scholarships=less debt=GOOD!!!! It doesn't matter so much when it comes to getting a job though...or so I hear...the interview is everything. Also, things you did in school besides school...e.g. flight team, marketing club, student activities council, etc.
