nope, because for jerks like me that post a lot, see, the banner would be on the messageboard like 5,000 times, and that would run up the bandwith a lot . . . :afro:

Calling things retarded isn't funny. Please think about it next time and use a thesaurus if you can't come up with anything else.

Well, if he says its retarded, that offends the retards? What if he said thats lame, would it offend the lame?

skilletosis

If you were using lame in a derogatory sence it probably would.

From Websters:
Main Entry: re·tard·ed
Pronunciation: ri-'tär-d&d
Function: adjective
sometimes offensive : slow or limited in intellectual or emotional development or academic progress

It's not that it's offensive only to those who are retarded (which still wouldn't make it right). It is that it is offensive to parents, siblings, family members, teachers, and caregivers of those who are retarded or have other developmental disabilities. It's a rude and unwise choice of words even when one is only using it in a slang sence. Now one could claim that they were ignorant of this. But now consider yourself educated on the subject.

They don't say the word 'retarded' as much anymore. Most people are just using Mentally Disabled Adults (I dont even know if that should capitalized.)

yeah, sorry. we don't allow it because it uses up too much bandwidth. plus, for those with slow connection, it would make it difficult to access the board. and we want as many people as possible to be able to come on here if they want to.

if you wanted it for your band, you can just put a link to your website in your signature.

The correct term is Developmentally Disabled. A while back I posted the difference between Mentaly Disabled and Developmentaly Disabled. Which are two totaly different things. Short version is Mental has to do with mental illnesses and developementaly disabled has to do with brain development. It's to lengthy to repost so I would suggest a quick hop over to wikipedia if you would like more info on it. Now in some states "Retarded" is no longer a term legally used, but that's a whole different subject.

It's ok. I always address the subject when it comes up because with all the scientific research going on; larger groups are being broken down into subsets with thier own names yet they still fall under the umbrella of Developmentally Disabled. I'm sure that 95% if the public aren't up to date on these things. Since it's a part of my daily life I do take it upon myself to try and educate people on the subject. You know 50 years ago people with disabilities such as Autism and other developmental disabilities were being diagnosed with things like scizophrenia and put in institutions with no educational oppertunities. I feel that societies ignorance of the topic is unacceptable when you look at the statistics. 1 in every 166 children are born with some form of Autism. The need for teens and young adults to make career choices (choosing college majors) that help to educate and provide therapies is huge. It is much better for those affected and society as a whole to provide as much education and therapy needed to teach life skills so they can become as independant as they can be.

back to topic.... banners... no

Alorian your a smart individual. Look up the subject and you'll find that it has nothing to do with semantics or pc. It has to do with the research and understanding of the brain that we have now as opposed to what we knew 50 years ago. Oh if anyone would like to recieve further information I would be happy to pm with you.

and banners... no

Stay on topic, banners, yeah, not allowed, bandwidth etc...

Thanks :) if only that were true...
Yeah, but I think that we're both partially right, I think it's a combo of both. We have come to understand things much better now, but we still tend to pc ourselves and change wording around so that people aren't offended...

Banners, yeah, they take too much space with people like bob up there, slows down the site, makes things annoying, yeah, feel free to put some up in your house, though ;)

Once you load a banner once, unless you delete your temporary internet files, it loads near instantly all the following times. But thats still alot of banners to load.

loads near instantly all the following times? you tell that to users like completely_nuts who aren't even on a 56k modem. we strive to make the site as cool as we can without killing all the dial-up users.

Well, I wasn't implying that you let us use banners, but thats what temporary internet files are there for..

Besides, dont you just hate it when peoples signatures are consistently 2-3 times the length of their posts?

skynes

Even Temporary internet files are only so fast. Now we're going into the Hardware of the persons PC.

I hate really long signatures, some people on other boardsh ave signature that are half a page long, mostly filled with insanely flashy images.

Their average post? "Lol." or "I agree."

I have dial-up at home, it seems to take forever even without the images in sigs. Imagine forever plus 4 minutes. (tee hee)

I have a couple good banners. But I'm not complaining. Why? Despite my 'Net speed (which is average, by the way), my computer doesn't load images almost instantly. I stopped going to lots of boards because a page full of banners had to load before I could read.
