Do you some how feel unclean when purchasing Greatest Hits albums? I for one do. I feel the need to buy all the albums for the band that are good, not just the absolute best songs. Like with The Rolling Stones for example, I had the Greatest Hits for a while, then I dropped $80 on Rolling Stones albums, and I sleep better at night for it.
Do you guys feel the same?

i think when bands release a Greatest Hits CD, it's kind of a comp-out (i know more often than not it is the label doing it for money). i'd rather have the bands i like coming out with fresh, new material vs. re-packing 'old' songs.
i, like you, would rather go and buy the album that has the song i like.
but i guess if you really only liked those one or two hits, and nothing else by the band, than greatest hit compilations cd are worth the money. *shrugs*

Yes, I hate with a passion "greatest hits" albums. Usually packed with songs that made them the most money but wern't really the best songs they've done.
I don't mind it so much when they completely rerecord all the songs for the album, but when they just put all the origional tracks on a cd, I see that as laziness and an excuse to make a few more bucks.

Sometimes i feel a bit weird when buying a greatest hits album.. and i dont bother when i have all of a bands normal albums, because you generally just getting the same songs so it's a waste of money.. but when i dont have any of the bands stuff i may get a greatest hits album.. like the last one i got which was "the essential Clash"... It was much essier getting that then trying to find all their albums..

Better question, who actually even buys those things? No one I know of...

yeah i dont really like greatest hits....id rather have all the c.d's ..i feel like im missing something if i dont~~
Hm, I buy greatest hits albums. Only three, but still I've bought them. Van Halen and Queen (2). I did not have the money at the time I wanted to have their music in my collecation to buy every single one of their albums.
I felt no shame or guilt in doing what I've done.

i'm split.
i generally don't enjoy the radio singles (which end up comprising 85% of the Greatest Hit songs) as much as i do the songs buried somewhere within the album. you know, the songs you desperately want the band to play in concert, but they never do.
that's why i've not bought any of the GH U2 albums (tho i'd first have to decide which one i want first). i want the real deal, full-length album, complete with songs i don't like.
but, it is nice to have Greatest Hits for people to get into the band. if you enjoy a couple radio singles from different albums, you can get the GH CD. and who knows, it might convert a new fan.

Well, it depends. They band can't just make new material if they are no longer a band ( deaths or just split) , such as Creed ala their Greatest Hits CD. However if someone like Skillet made a greatest hits for instance, it would be quite lame.

I buy greatest hits to test the waters for bands. I did it with Bauhaus and Joy Division. Then I go buy the rest of their cds if I like their greatest hits enough.

yeah...that was really silly. i think all star united did the same thing - but i think it's because they had to finish their contract, so they just threw a GH cd together and ended that.

Yeah, I'm fairly certain that's why plumb did it too.

yes i like having the actual albums better because everyones opinion on the bands "greatest hits" are different. usually if the band is good, the cds are still really great.

Exactly. Every band has a few weak songs, but you can't expect the best all the time. When I buy albums to bands I have on Greatest Hits already, I discover all new songs that I like a lot, which is a great feeling.
