Male vocalist. Every band that I listen to that I like, has a male vocalist excluding Fleetwood Mac, and Heart.
yeah, most of the singers that i like are male

For rock and stuff: male, definately.
I love female voices when they are singing slower, beautiful songs. But for faster songs, especially rock songs, it's gotta be male.

COMPLETELY DEPENDS... on style of music and the voice abilities of the singers. And how their voice blends with the style.
I like some Celtic songs sung by women. I like some heavy rock with some dark male voice. Get what I mean?

Yeah, what Lydia said.
Yeah, well i'm meaning as a whole. Because I was thinking about this on the 10 hour ride down to my grandparents, all the songs my dad was listening to I didn't really like, and then I realized they were all female vocalist playing rock music. I just prefer males voices overall.

As in my previous post, I have to say I prefer male vocalists, but I can't ignore the females. Women like Amy Lee of Evanescence (sp?) and Miss Adie of The Benjamine Gate cannot be ignored. Women can sing absolutely beautifully and to me it's just so relaxing and wonderful to listen to a woman with a beautiful voice sing a slower song.
My dad today said he likes female vocalists because their lyrics are deeper, I don't think that's true because it all depends on the writing style of the singer.

not to mention, a woman vocalist might not have written the songs. certain artists don't write songs at all, they just sing songs others have written for them (this goes for both genders).

its not that i like male vocalists better, i've only heard male vocalists for certain styles i prefer which happens to be progressive rock and metal. it depends the style too i suppose... i like singers like james labrie of dream theater

Can you actually call them artists if they don't write their own songs?

Well, if they're like The Monkees, no. But if they just cover songs once and a while, or partially re-write them, yes.

Hm. I'm actually relatively half and half for male/female vocalists. I like female vocalists in hard music (Angela Gossow, Shirley Manson, girl from Melt Banana) as well. Doesn't matter to me. I'd rather have a nice female voice than a crappy metal male voice; one that sounds like they have their pants on a bit too tight.

Ya, I'm kind of spit. I love male vocals but there are ways that female vocals rock. I can picture a female vocal being really good in post hardcore or even hardcore. I just havn't heard anyone do it yet so I couldn't give you an example. & not to mention korey's vocals are awsome. So I suppose I'm in the middle.

not really.
there was a study done where they found the male brain actually has to decode the female voice. to us, it registers more as music than it does language. whereas a guy's voice sounds like language right off the bat. it's nothing conscious, but it's there.
so it's not so much sexist as what you like.

Maybe it's because with certain vocal sounds comes certain types of music and different styles of playing music.

females or males what difference is there. it shouyldnt bother you if the singer is male or female, most people like songs for the lyrics or the music in the song, not wether the vocalist is male or female!!!

true, the lyrics are the most important part, but the vocals do matter. you can't say they don't.
my favorite version of "Little Drummer Boy" (my fave carol) is by Jars of Clay. yesterday i heard a version at work with a female lead and i didn't like it as much. didn't have the same goodness to it.

i am more picky when it comes to female vocalists. too often i think they are just sticking in their "chest voice" which is the easy way out, imo.
that's not to say i'm not picky with male vocalists... i just like their voices, more often than not, between the two.
vocals are the first thing i listen to in a band. if the vocals don't impress me, i won't buy an album or listen to the band much. regardless of how good the other musicians are. *shrugs* not meaning to be harsh but it's the truth.

I would have to agree, it is so easy to have a good "chest voice" (good way of putting it, Tracy). The true value of a female vocalist is whats really in there. A female vocalist that can use the deeper and more full parts of their voice is a really good one. It also helps give their voice identity, most "chest voices" sound the same.

well no offense to female vocalists (i happen to be one) but most of them try to hard to have a "unique" sound to their voice nd it ends up sounding really really annoying....i cant stand when they try to jazz up a simple song like the national anthem....i hate girls voices like christina agulieria(sp).....i cant stand pop singers like her....

I'm gonna answer male to that. BUT! Theres many male vocalists and the majority of female vocalists are in crappy poser pop such as Britany Spears, Lindsay Lohan, and Hilary Duff. That was the only reason I chose male. Although there's some great female voices in Rock such as Evanescence, Lacuna Coil, and The Distillers.

I voted for female because a lot of female band leaders are very talented, like Flyleaf, Megan McCauley and Evanescence. Some of the male vocal leaders are, in my opinion, too bland and unoriginal.

I enjoy male vocalist better because well, they just sound better; like Chester Bennington of Linkin Park or Maynard James Keenan from Tool/APC. I can't stand the singer from lacuna coil or Flyleaf (they're both so whiny) but Amy Lee from Evanescence is very talented.

So I was browsing through this thread and I guess I'll update some of my favorite female and male singers.
Right now, I love Cocteau Twin's Elizabeth Fraser. Her voice is completely relaxing, and she sings in different languages or made-up words. Karin from Collide is really relaxing too. But then again, I can listen to male vocals like those at the beginning of tweaker's cd or Virgin Black. They're all very soothing.
And Brendan Perry's voice in Dead Can Dance songs where he is the lead are soooooo good.
