I love Collide, but I don't like the long drum and guitar solos on My Obsession, so I ripped the song onto my computer and did a little bit of editing. All I did was shorten the solos, but I thought it sounded a lot better. I'm not going to post a link to the file, because it's a copyrighted song, but I was just wondering what everyone else thought of the solos.

I love the song, and I love the whole CD... I love guitars and drums. I just don't think those solos should have been so long. I've got a 27 second (legal length) clip of my version if anyone wants me to e-mail it to them.

were they too long??? HECK NO! That song is awesome! The whole cd rocks, it's like you listen to Skillet's earlier stuff and think "hey they are really talented, so talented it makes me a little nervous the next album won't be that good" and then I listened to Collide and thought "DANG AND I THOUGHT THEY WERE AWESOME BEFORE! THEY ARE EVEN COOLER THAN I THOUGHT!" because they just keep getting better and better! so ya love that song!

drum and guitar solos are the best when eles will john find time to head bang between singing and yes ben kicks major butt on the solo as always skillet rocks hard and i also love the whole album ive had it since monday and play it over and over and love it more each time . i still cant pick a fav song each one has a message behind it i can identify with and they all blow me away. but back on the subject of the solo i think it could stand to be longer :D rock on

haha good call rockchick_panhead, that's exactly my view on it, it just amazes me more each and every day and yes, i think Ben could've done a little longer solo if he wanted to, it would just make the song even better then it is now.

Yeah Loren (rockchick_panhead) I totally agree w/ ya gurl! I luuuv Ben's solos & listening to Lori "beat the brains out of her drums"!!!! My favorite solo (this kinda is offsubject) is in "Imperfection". That solo is like how Ben goes krazy live. aaah no my friend the solos arent too long, they're not long enuf! (i.m.h.o.)

You hit the nail on the head with the guitar solo on Imperfection. It's just awe-some.

My Obsession is such a good song... what accentuates it are the drums and guitar portions. I don't think it'd work as well with those segments out.

i am currently listening to the song on trial, & when the big solo came up, i paid extra close attention to it. i like the length it's at. too long & you get lost in the melody of it & the lyrics get disjointed. too short & the jump from John screaming the chorus to "Am I a lunatic?..." is too abrupt.

of course, this is all my opinion, but i know you all hold my opinion in such high esteem. ;) ::)

Hmm, dont see the problem with the solo stuff. If anything it makes the song that much better.

Ben Kasika is an incredible guitarist and he gets to solo for as long as he wants! :) What really sucks with "modern" music is the long instrumental solos are found few and far between. So many people dislike them now. Why? I don't know. All I know is guitar and drum solos rule, especially by Ben and Lori! :) The solos aren't even that long!!!

Bands like Kutless (they have a few licks) and ... let me think... well, bands with no solos are okay, but bands like Skillet, Third Day, GS Megaphone and 12 Stones that pull off really good solo's are the bands that top my list.

to long NO WAY...... I think alot of bands (not all but alot) that haven't done much in the area of solos don't have musicians that could even play a solo. Solo's have been missing for far too long. As much as I love the electronics in Skillets past cd I love this new one. Picture this in your head. 35 year old mom of 3 blasting My Obsession in the kitchen, singing out as loud as possible, and head banging while doing the dishes.... Is it a great song with great rocking solo's? YES YES YES

I think this post could also fall into the "you know your a panhead when" thread also. lololol

I LOVE solos!!! And I, personally, like longer songs!!! I would much rather have a 4-5 minute song with solos and bridges and stuff than a 2-3 minute song with nothing of the sort!!! While 'My Obsession' is not my favorite song on the album, it definitely is good! ;D

Yes, I agree. With the solos, my ten-track cd is actually longer than my 13-track cd.

I love it. :)

Is that really a solo? sounds more like a few chords, with the drums doing the same beat, I guess it could be, but kinda like a bridge/ interlude to me. But it still is rocking .

11-28-2003, 01:07 PM
I like the musical interlude. Also, it opens up opportunity for the band to go crazy live with this song...as they did with "Stronger". If you've seen them play this song live, you'd know that they have a moment in the song where they all go insane with their instruments...i love it. m/ It's quite awesome. I'm just saying that with a musical interlude such as this on My Obsession, it could open up the opportunity for another one of those.

Being a guitarist, I love solos, especially guitar solos and think they're mad awesome. they rocketh.

I'm listening to "My Obsession" right now...no, the solos aren't too long...in all reality, they're not long enough. I would pay a hundred bucks to spend two hours jammin' with Ben and Lori. And I agree about the whole bass thing. That would make the CD absolutely perfect. My moto is: Make it complicated.
If it's easy...screw it up a bit and make it harder...and Bed definitely does that. lol

Yes, I love to love a song and then realize it's partly due to how well the instruments 'flow' together. I also love being able to pick the bass out of the song. It rocks!
