You had Jimmy Eat World in that list.. are they really emo?? I would have them classed, if anything, as rock with a slight punk influence. Did they change their style to more punk/emo/whatever people call it?? I havent heard them for a couple years, but heard 2 albums that where not close to anything resembling emo, just rock with punk influence.

on a side note, i don't really know where this fad of emo kids cutting themselves came from. oh wait, i do. it's from bands like the used and mcr, who sing like they're just SO depressed. and they aren't. if they were that depressed and they wanted to die so badly, they'd be dead right now. i can't really think of any bands i listen to that sing like that or act like that. to be honest, this trend of emo kids cutting themselves is pathetic and really starting to piss me off. they love to think they're REALLY depressed because they scratched their forearm with mom's favorite butterknife last night, and guess what? it ALMOST bled!!! that's the main reason that i hate the used and mcr...because it was bands like them that started it...and it's nothing but a massive drain to teenagers of society.

While I agree that it's terrible that some people find the only way to deal with the problems is to inflict physical pain upon themselves, I wouldn't directly blame the bands. Yeah, music has a HUGE influence on a lot of people, heck even most people. Especially impressionable teenagers. While MCR and The Used have a lot of violence in their lyrics and songs, I don't think they intend to promote or even condone that type of behavoir. It'd be like blaming everyone having sex on some song that mentions it or something. The song "I'm a Fake" on The Used's "In Love and Death" album is totally ANTI-cutter, with a spoken-word part at the beginning that is just screaming for the opposite of cutting...

And not everyone cuts because of a song or a culture or a fad...to blame this terrible behavior on that is to belittle those who need help...

1: cutting was around long long before emo music. It's completely ignorant to associate people that cut themselves and emo music or any other type of music. Ive known people that cut themselves that liked jazz and no rock whatso ever... Music and cutting are 2 completely different things, and people dont cut because of a certain style of music... or a certain type of culture, people cut because of different "personal" issues they have, and that would NOT change by listening to a different type of music.

2: making fun of people cutting is just pointless, and not good. I was going to say useless, but thats wrong Making fun of people can do harmful things to them, esspecially if they are already in a fragile state of mind...
Making fun of anyone for any situation (cutting or something else) is not a good thing, its not how God would want us to treat other people either. Jesus had compassion on the hurting people of the world... we should try to be the same.. If you are going to say anything, say something that will help people, not make pathetic jokes aimed at people just for 2 seconds of amusement.

3: what is with people flaming others for liking a different type of music... it's just dumb.. plain dumb... everyone is different.. thats how God made us... with different personalitys etc.....
I hear metal people flaming punk people cause they think punk is crap... i hear the same from punk people who think metal is crap... and same with country music, and jazz, and pop...
Grow up people...who really gives a stuff if someone else likes something different to you... it doesnt make their type of music crap... it doesnt make them any less of a person then anyone else..
There is crap music in every type/style of music... punk has good and crap bands.. same with metal...same with country, anbd jazz.. and Pop (yes, even pop has talanted people)
I'm so sick of people flaming everyone that doesnt like the music you think is good, and like music that you dont like... its lame....

First of all , it was entirely meant to be a joke. I have never cut my self when sad or angry, but I have punched metal doors until my knuckles were ripped. Does that count?

Second of all, I never stated I don't like emo as Pretendeaver seems to try to lead you into thinking I did. I actually do. I stated in the emo vs hardcore thread that I thought hardcore blew emo away, but since then, I really have balanced the two. I love em both. I love them combined.

Third, Pretendeaver is so defensive, I have reason to believe he COULD be a cutter. If this is not the case, I'm sorry.

Fourth. Before you try to take the dust from eye, remove the beam from your own *beep* eye. Flaming me for posting a light hearted-intentions joke, then saying you hope we burn? That's hypocrisy right there.

And I have to admit, I have seen many an emo kid with songs or poetry that was somewhere down the line of "For you I stab my heart out, stab, twist, stab stab. "

Once again I'm somewhat sorry I posted that, as it wasn't meant to be offensive. But I find you telling us to burn, assumingly in hell, 100x more offensive than the concept of grass cutting itself.

By the way, let me use a little of your logic.

You say, that since alot of people on this forum struggle with cutting, making a reference, that was intended to be purely humorous, is wrong, because people struggle with this.

They are offended by it cause you refer to something they do.. well

you all are hypocrites and i hope you all burn.

Almost everyone is a hyprocrite to some degree. The only person who ever lived who never once contradicted themselves is Jesus. But see.. you just labeled us all as hypocrites. You did the same thing I allegedly did when I "labeled all cutters as emo" or "all emo as cutters." You just assumed we are all hypocrites, something you just blasted me about, assuming all emo are cutters.. therefore, you are the hyprocrit.

Alot of the people who read this forum are going to hell. Cold hard truth. But yet you just flame away because someone made a lighthearted comment about GRASS! You tell us to burn! ( which , I assume, in hell you mean).

Now, if I told you to burn in hell, would that not be offense to you?

Oh yeah , speaking of jeans.. I saw some kids in a clothing store the other day. One was a pretty petite boy, so I don't you can find pants to hug his legs, but he had on some pretty tight jeans, but it was ok. Now one of the guys he was with ( I'd say they were 14-15) had on a hoody and some TIGHT jeans. I mean it was repulsive. I quite literally wanted to ask him what girl he stole them from. I mean, the way they hugged his butt and legs, it was sick. Anyway, rant mode off.

Ah, I just realized something .. the emo description I listed in the post above this one.. that actually is sort of the hardcore description. Well, to be honest, the line is so blurry. But anyway, I am not trying to rag anyone on their style btw. If thats how you feel comfortable , and thats how you like dressing, and you don't do it just to try to be.. scene.. then awesome. I find it offensive that you have a beer reference in your location because I once struggled with alcohol. I also find it offensive that you have Tennessee as your location since I had a bad experiance there. I also find it offensive that you have a guy in your avatar that looks like a guy that beat me up once. I also find it offensive that you're telling a preacher to panic in your avatar. Preachers are meant to be firm, and strong, not panicing.

It was just a joke. If we get offended so easily, that's going to get us nowhere. Seriously, I did struggle with alcohol for a long time. Seeing that "comical" reference to alochol could be destructive. Or I could pretend that I'm not that weak, and it's not a problem anymore.

Now about that whole "You should burn in hell since you make fun of EMO kids" deal, grow up. EMO means emotional. Boys shouldn't be overly emotional, sorry. If they are, there's going to be no strong base in a marraige, just a lot of depression, and sadness.

How many of these people do you really think will still be EMO in 10 years? Will still listen to that music in 10 years? All my aunts and uncles loved Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, The Beatles etc. when they were kids, but now they couldn't be bothered with listening to them. It's just a trend.

i want to say one thing about emo what i think, emo is someone with emotions every living thing is emo because it has emotions thats all doesnt mean they all cut them selves or other things they get into every human has emo moments!

That's where the whole common sense thing comes in. It was a lighthearted joke, meant to be laughed at for a few seconds, and then you move on. I could be part of a rare UFO suicide cult, in which every member kills themselves whenever someone posts about how whenever someone posts what they're listening to on that thread, we'd kill ourselves. That would be hurtful to me. Everything's hurtful to someone, it's just a matter of practicing common sense.

its a strong fact you hate everything emo. you found the joke funny because yoiu hate emo and you just get a good laugh about it. thats fine you can hate emo. but i hate ppl like you so there we have a right to hate and the right to love. this topic has seriously gone way out of topic. this is about emo music not emo kids. if you hate emo music or kids than dont post on any thread related to them. creat your own thread to bash them.

I heard the used and hawthorne heights are releaseing a new cd beging of next year.

I never posted that on Panheads.org. That was on my MySpace, which is my own buisiness.

And you're right. I hate EMO, and everything it stands for. I hate bands like Taking Back Sunday, Funeral For A Friend, My Chemical Romance, Hawthorne Heights etc. I stopped posting my vast dislike for this whole fad a long time ago on this board. I had no intention of dragging it back up. I was simply explaining to Michael that I found his joke funny.

Now back on topic, I've heard some people call Nirvana an EMO band. What would you say to this?

I completely disagree...Emo came about mainly when punk bands began to put more personal stuff in their music and lyrics...Nirvana was never an off-shoot of punk, but rather rock that was called Grunge...

Kurt Cobain might bave portrayed some of his emotions in his music, but yeah, like Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, it was grunge.

Oh my God. What a stupid, stupid argument. Brandon, why must you twist EVERYTHING?! The joke was hilarious. It wans't meant to offend anyone. I swear you LOOK for reasons to become offended. You go around picking fights and blowing everything out of porportion. I wish you and Greg would get off off each other. This is REALLY getting old.

I read the thread and I was so ticked off I had to post. The reason I addressed YOU was because you were the only one who kept it up longer than it needed to be. I'm sorry for bringing it up again, but, PLEASE, when will it stop?!

It will stop when people learn to be more sensitive. And when people stop instigating unnecessarily.

Is it that hard to grasp?

There is a thin sensitivity line on issues like that, and it has been crossed in both directions. Maybe some members of the board were overly sensitive to a comment that was meant to be silly. But then at the same time, I feel that the comment made - however much in fun it was meant - was making far too light of a very serious issue that a lot of people deal with.

Just because we may not understand the subject of cutting or why people would want to do that, etc., does not in any way negate the intensity of the topic.

And you know... maybe "emo kids" would stop being so emotional and sensitive if people would stop being so damn hard on them for having feeling.

I'd like to say that everything is offensive to someone. Anything, that ANYONE says is going to make someone, SOMEWHERE, angry. We all might as well stop joking about everything. Why bother? It'll just upset someone out there...

Homosexuality, liberalism, blonde jokes, rasism, game consoles... EVERYTHING is offensive, if you look at it from every single perspective. If you are going to take everything so seriously, go dig yourself a hole and become a hermit. This whole argument is ridiculous. Even cutters admitted the joke was funny.

Maybe. But you know what? It wasn't. Issues aren't serious so we can make fun of them. Where's that good old Christian compassion?

So, should kids that are emotionally unstable be given some incentive to act better? I've grown up being taught to "suck it up" and that's how I am, and I know some people show their emotion, and if that's what they want to do, good for them, but how are they to be treated if they get offended by anything that I say?

if you have nothing nice to say to anyone at all dont say it at all. if you do treat others the way you wanna be treated. that joke was about a senstive topic i dont find it funny. cutting is a serious issues with teens today.

I think Liz was pretty accurate with everything is offensive. Everything everyone says has to be so politically correct nowadays. My sister, who is a teacher, told me that she cannot tell the children to sit "Indian" Style. I think now they call it.. criss-cross-apple-sauce?

Seriously. I'm not trying to mock cutters. But sometimes even the worst of circumstances can have its load lightened with a little humorous outlook.

I heard a joke not too long ago that said "I called your boyfriend gay and he hit me with his purse." That would obviously offend gay people. But it made me laugh. But then again I'm not gay.. ( disclaimer: I have nothing against gay people , and not trying to offend, just illustrating my point)

There are way too many blonde jokes to even try to mention, but they offend most blondes.

Basically , its gotten to the point where 90% of humorous remarks are considered offensive by atleast someone , somewhere.

I will try to be more considerate in the future, but I am NOT , nor will I EVER give up my sense of humor in this world where people take offense even to the way you eat your cereal.

And not everyone cuts because of a song or a culture or a fad...to blame this terrible behavior on that is to belittle those who need help...

well thalia. i'm honestly quite sorry to disagree with you, because i think you're awesome and one of the few people i actually like on these boards...but yeah i'm gonna have to say that i'm a fake isn't really anti-cutter...but taking a second look at it, i'm not quite sure how "pro-cutter" it is, either. but...when we went to taste of chaos last year, bert totally condoned it at the concert and we found it very pathetic. he's screaming this poem onstage with thousands of teenagers with not a scratch on their arms chanting it along with him. i know, this seems like a really weak argument, but i guess you had to kind of be there to understand it. never mind, i sounded like a total idiot. i've lost this one, thalia. there's just too much insider information that i cannot tell you that would make my argument a thousand times better, but i don't really know how to share it, therefore, i'll accept a loss here.

Hey, we wouldn't be humans if we didn't disagree on some things! I can honestly say I didn't go to Taste of Chaos, and have never been to a Used concert, but I HAVE been to an MCR concert, where Gerard encouraged the crowd to NOT commit suicide, that it was the "easy" way out, and to NOT do that. He also encouraged girls to have standards and stick up for themselves. While I do NOT hold Bert or Gerard as idols by ANY means, I do enjoy both bands, and I thought it very commendable what Gerard had to say on stage. I personally consider "I'm a Fake" as anti-cutter because that's how I interpreted it when I listened to it...but everyone interprets things differently, so I can very well see how someone else could think of it differently.

And I meant those things not as an attack on you at all, because I enjoy your input on these boards, but rather as my defense for two bands I enjoy. But I also think that both The Used and MCR don't need to be listened to by anyone under the age of about 16 or so...I've held that belief for a long time now...

since the mods are doing nothing im steping up. okay no more fighting about the joke. i still find it a serious issue and its a senstive topic to some ppl. shut the hell up if you think it was funny and if you disagree with me so what i dont give a crap about what the hell you say my opion is my opion if you dont like it go shove it. I want this thread to be about emo music and i want it to stay open not locked. So no more fighting about the joke. Next time be more senstive on the jokes. So basicly next time when the topic is been back on topic when we pulled out of fighting dont post about the fight because all it will do is cause it to beging againg. Just shut your mouths and stay on topic.

First of all I want to say that I am sorry one of us didnt pick up on this earlier but the mods have lives too and like most ppl are especially busy this time of the year. Thanks to the ones who took time to bring it to my attention.

That being said I am going to shut it down for the time being...to let everyone cool down and then we will make a decision as to where to go from here.

Thanks

Ok guys i have decided to open this again...I have faith that you guys can have discussions without getting out of hand...dont let me down.

I would like to share a thought with ya...How many of you got Skillets newsletter on Dec.9? In it John told a story of how he and some of his friends were eating at a fast food joint when this complete stranger starting yelling at him and threatening to beat him up for no reason. Thankfully nothing happened and the guy eventually left but John never said a word to him...in fact he said he felt sorry for the guy because he didn't have the joy and peace and hope that Jesus gives. I think that is a good lesson for us all...if someone is trying to yank your chain...just don't respond..and remember that Jesus loves them too.

Internet fighting is a lot like a dog chasing its tail...it just goes around in circles and nothing is gained by it.

It should go without saying that we will be watching this thread...if it goes sour again it will probably be closed for good.

God bless and have a happy new year all.

John
